People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), an international nonprofit organization with more than 1.6 million members and supporters, is the largest animal rights organization in the world. PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: in factory farms, laboratories, the clothing trade, and the entertainment industry. In PETA’s case, the Research and Investigations Department had collected hundreds of thousands of pages of documents, including investigative reports, news articles, Freedom of Information Act responses, case files, and research documents.

PETA wanted to increase its ability to find important information quickly, easily, and efficiently. In addition, there was a large paper archive that was not easily accessible. Many files were stored off-site. Modern Image provided scanning services, high-quality optical character recognition, robust search capabilities, and a day-forward scanning infrastructure. Now, when information is needed, researchers simply open the search engine and enter keywords. Instead of having to wait for hours or days, they have information at their fingertips. Furthermore, Modern Image provided shredding and recycling services for the paper archives after scanning. After an extensive review of available search and retrieval technology, PETA implemented dtSearch because of its powerful search capabilities. PETA researchers can now search any archived document, database, or Web site.
